About Pilates

"Self confidence, poise, consciousness of possesing the power to accomplish our desires with the renewed lively interest in life are the natural results of the practice... [The Pilates Method]"

-Joseph Pilates, Originator

Pilates is stretching and strengthening muscles from a controlled center. Famous for being an exercise system which lengthens the body, not surprisingly dancers were amongst the first to take to the method. In the 1920's Joseph Pilates, conceived more than 500 specific exercises using five major pieces of unique apparatus to develop the body uniformly. In approach to his method, Joseph Pilates valued form and preferred fewer precisely controlled movements over repetition when executing each of the exercises.

The Pilates Center of San Francisco is dedicated to the original teaching of Joseph Pilates. Our instructors have knowledge of the full breadth of the work instructor and are trained to tailor the system specifically for each client based on age, fitness goals, and previous or current injuries. The senior teachers Martt Lawrence (10 years experience) and Emily Goldenberg (6 Years) have studied with Master Teacher Romana Kryzanowska, Sari Mejia Santo, and Dorothee Van DeWalle. The focus is on core strength, posture strength, identifying and correcting any bad habits or misalignments. We reeducate the body with better movement patterns. The result is a strengthened body which is less vulnerable to injuries. We meet the needs of our clients on a personal level whether they are dancers aiming for strength and longevity of career, athletes looking recovering from an injury, or individuals working toward a higher overall quality of life.
